Power: A Collaboration with Mary Beard

High-voltage Feminism

Power – one word to denote physical strength, force, the capacity to rule and influence others, electrical energy and the ability to shock – literally. The lightning bolt is quick becoming a symbol of high voltage feminism.

Mary Beard’s manifesto Women & Power (published by Profile Books) considers the public voice of women and asks: if women aren't perceived to be within the structures of power, isn't it power that we need to redefine? While another bestseller and feminist work, Naomi Alderman's The Power, describes a world in which women have the power to produce a deadly electric charge, resulting in a radical shift in the balance of power between the sexes.

    The original designs

I wanted to capture the strong, contrasts of the book and the metallic dust jacket in these first three colours: silver glitter, gold glitter and black.

I wanted to play on the literal meaning of 'power' and so came up with the idea of incorporating the High Voltage symbol. Naomi Alderman's The Power had just come out and I loved this idea of electrifying the word.
